Top 5 Must Watch American Sitcoms

A situation comedy, or sitcom, is a genre of comedy centered on characters who share a common environment, such as a home or workplace, with often humorous dialogue. America has produced some of the funniest sitcoms ever which have not only gained a lot of popularity but also occupied a special place in the hearts of millions of audience around the world. Here is a list of 5 must watch American sitcoms:

FRIENDS (1994- 2004)

5 Must Watch American Sitcoms - FriendsFriends is the first of 5 must watch American sitcoms. This is my all time favorite series. This show is about a group of six close friends- Rachel, Ross, Chandler, Joey, Phoebe and Monica living in Manhattan. It is one of the most popular series ever shown on TV. This show ended ten years ago, but the imprint it left on its fans has led to an increasing demand of ‘Friends’ movie. ‘Friends’ is created by David Crane and Martha. It originally aired September 22nd, 1994 on NBC. The series ran for ten seasons and the series finale aired on May 6th, 2004 was watched by almost 52.5 million American viewers. Every single episode makes you laugh out loud. Despite having memorized the punch lines, it never gets old! I have watched every single episode 5 times, but I still laugh as hard as I did the first time. For me ‘ an episode of Friends a day keeps stress away!’ I can’t stress enough that there is no sitcom better than this nor there will be. Friends Is Always Going To Be The Best And The Funniest!

5 must watch American Sitcoms - The Big Bang TheoryThe Big Bang Theory often abbreviated to TBBT is an American sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, both of whom serve as executive producers on the series, along with Steven Molaro. I find it to be the best sitcom made after Friends. This show is basically about two nerds Leonard and Sheldon and an attractive girl Penny who moves into the apartment across the hall from two brilliant but socially awkward physicists and shows them the world outside of the laboratory. There are other main characters Rajesh and Howard, who are friends with Leonard and Sheldon. All of them are nerds who struggle to fit into society. Rajesh suffers from selective mutism that means he can’t talk to women. The show becomes even more interesting to watch when these nerds get girlfriends as this is totally new to them. The character of Sheldon is super weird which adds a certain charm and uniqueness to the show.

TWO AND A HALF MEN (with Charlie Sheen, 2003-2010)

5 Must Watch American Sitcoms - Two And A Half MenTwo and a Half Men is an American television sitcom that began broadcast on CBS on September 22, 2003, and ended on February 19, 2015, after 12 seasons. The show is about two brothers Alan Harper and Charlie Harper and Alan’s son Jake. Alan who is kicked out by his wife Judith moves into his Brother Charlie’s house with his 10-year-old son Jake. Charlie is an alcoholic, and a playboy and Alan is a struggling chiropractor, intelligent but continually stricken with bad luck due to poor choices and mistakes. There is Rose who is Charlie’s stalker and Evelyn- the mother of Alan and Charlie. Two and a Half Men is not as funny as it was under Charlie Harper who was the heart of the show whose character was killed off in the 9th season. The show lost its vigor after that. But I still recommend watching this show till before his death.

5 Must Watch American Sitcoms- How I Met Your MotherHow I Met Your Mother (often abbreviated to HIMYM) is the fourth in the list of 5 must watch American sitcoms. It originally aired on CBS from September 19, 2005, to March 31, 2014. HIMYM is an amazing show that makes you laugh out loud but also teaches valuable life lessons. A father recounts to his children, through a series of flashbacks, the journey he and his four best friends took leading up to him meeting their mother. The story revolves around the life of 5 friends- Ted, Barney, Marshall, Lily and Robin. People consider Ted to be the main character, but I think that Barney’s character is the heart and soul of the show. The horrible ending caused a large number of audiences to be infuriated (I personally hated the series finale). But other than that I consider this show as a must-watch. I would have ranked it second if they gave this awesome show a nice, meaningful ending.

5 Must Watch American Sitcoms - Two Broke Girls

The last of 5 must watch American sitcoms is Two Broke Girls. It’s an American sitcom created for Warner Bros Television by Michael Patrick King and Whitney Cummings. It premiered in the United States on CBS in September 2011. The show revolves around the lives of 2 broke girls living in New York City finding themselves trying to raise enough money to open their own cupcake business. One is Caroline Channing who comes from a wealthy background. Caroline is forced into waitressing and doing occasional odd jobs after her home, and all her money is taken when the government finds out that her father is involved in a Ponzi scheme and apparently stole investor’s money. The other one is Max Black who is quite the opposite of Caroline. She is sarcastic, street-smart, feisty and comes from a dysfunctional family. There are other characters like Oleg, Earl, Han Lee and Sophie Kaczynski who are hilarious. The characters have a very nice sense of humor that makes you laugh out loud.

  1. I’m still watching TBBT! I just love how all the characters fit together perfectly and at times their social awkwardness is just outright hilarious. Two broke girls sounds like a good sitcom to watch as well! Thanks for coming up with this list! I think I’ll check TBG out next!
