How I Met Your Mother took over from Friends as the go-to sitcom about young New Yorkers navigating through life and love in the city. It made us laugh for almost a decade and cemented its place in the cultural lexicon. But there are certain episodes that are a blot on the show’s excellent quality. Here is a list of 5 Worst HIMYM episodes that almost all fans skip while watching.
The Wedding Bride (Season 5, Episode 23)
I know this episode has its own fans, but I can’t understand the hype. First of all, they showed us that Tony and Ted were cool with each other. Tony making Ted a jerk in his movie makes no sense. We’re supposed to think “The Wedding Bride” is funny. Some viewers may find the fictional movie funny because the characters in this film are based on characters we know. Based on the poor quality of the film, one thing is clear; it’s not funny and is poorly written.
The Autumn of Break-Ups (Season 8, Episode 5)
This episode follows “Who Wants to Be a Godparent?” It is the second worst one in the series, “The Autumn of Break-Ups.” Ted’s only compatible girlfriend until the Mother, Victoria, goes out of character so that the writers would have a reason to write her off of the show, which is a pretty big slap in the face for anyone who was fond of the character. In the B-plot, Barney takes a poodle as his wingman. He is not in the right frame of mind after his break-up with Quinn, but rather than being funny, it just comes off as being sad in all the wrong ways.
Slapsgiving 3 (Season 9, Episode 14)
This episode was so cringe-worthy, it didn’t warrant having an entire episode around what could have been told only in two minutes. All of the other slapsgivings had subplots, but an entire episode about just a slap is pretty bad. It did not advance the plot, didn’t show the mother and didn’t even show the final slap! To me, this was the worst episode of the season.
The Perfect Cocktail (Season 6, Episode 22)
“The Perfect Cocktail” actually tries to make Zoey a somewhat sympathetic character. She grew up in the Arcadian, that needs to be destroyed for Ted’s GNB tower idea to become a reality. Seeing another side to a generally unlikable character raises the episode a bit, but Ted putting his dream aside in the end to satisfy her is dumb on his part. Not to mention, seeing Marshall align with Zoey in this episode made me root against Marshall, the all-time adorable character.
Karma (Season 7, Episode 18)
The last of these worst HIMYM episodes is Karma. It is very strange that Barney fell for Quinn. She was a stripper, who didn’t exactly have a heart of gold. Coming off of a relationship with the very classy Nora, it is really surprising that he stooped down to Quinn’s level. I mostly remember this episode as the one where Ted moves out gives the apartment back to Marshall and Lily.
